Welcome Reception

The welcome reception will take place on Monday 29 June at De Brug (the top floor of the same building as the lectures, see Local Information) on the Roeterseiland campus, starting at 17:30.

Excursions

In the afternoon on Wednesday 1 July there will be two excursions. (The registration desk will tell you which one of the excursion you are registered for.)

Boat Trip

Join us for a 2-hour boat trip on the Amsterdam canals with the ship "Hildebrand", a spacious, sturdy tow barge that is the oldest passenger vessel in the Netherlands with its 1880 year of construction. At the time, the boat was pulled by a horse from the shore.

  • We embark (and disembark) from outside the Royal Theater Carré. Please be at the dock at 14h40 the latest; the boat will leave at 15h00 and return at 17h00. One drink per person is complementary, with a possibility of further drinks at your own expense.
  • A toilet is provided on the boat. Regarding accessibility, the ship has some small stairs. You will need to pass two steps to get on board and thereafter three steps to get into the boat. From there on everything is on the same level.

Walk through Zuid-Kennemerland National Park to the beach

This excursion consists of a one-hour walk through Nationaal Park Zuid-Kennemerland, with beautiful dune and coastal landscapes, and possibly some wildlife if we are lucky, followed by drinks at the beachside café Parnassia aan Zee.

  • We meet at the Tropenmuseum, also known as Wereldmuseum Amsterdam (Linnaeusstraat 2), at 14:15. It is about a ten-minute walk from the Roeterseiland Campus, the conference venue. The bus departs at 14:30 and takes us to the visitor centre of the national park, Bezoekerscentrum De Kennemerduinen.
  • We will then take an approximately one-hour walk towards the beach. We will follow the first part of the Blue Route / Tien Bergenroute; see the map and more information here.
This route is normally a circular walk, but we will only follow the first part of it. At choice point 39, instead of continuing the circular route, we will leave the loop and walk towards the beach at Parnassia aan Zee.|At the café Parnassia aan Zee, we offer one free drink per person. Please feel free to order additional drinks or snacks at your own expense. The bus departs back to Amsterdam at 18:00. You may stay longer at the beach, but please be aware that public transportation from the beach may not be very convenient.
  • No serious hiking is involved, but parts of the route may be sandy. We recommend
wearing comfortable shoes and bringing anything you may need for the beach.

Conference Dinner

In the evening of Thursday 2 July we will have a conference dinner at Restaurant Pllek in Amsterdam Noord. The address is: TT Neveritaweg 59, 1033 WB Amsterdam.

Pllek is easily accessible by public transport. A ferry departs from Amsterdam Central Station every half hour. It leaves from the rear of the central station, on the IJ side. It is the leftmost ferry with destination “NDSM-werf”. The restaurant is situated directly on the water, hidden behind the “Tree House” building, which consists of multiple shipping containers. The return ferry departs every half hour as well.
